Prepositions-1



A preposition is a word that links a noun or pronoun or noun phrase to some other part of the sentence.

A few common prepositions with examples:

ON:

a) with touching surfaces:

-The book is on the desk.
-The label is on the jar.
-Go and sit on the chair.
-He live on the 1st floor of this apartment.
-There is a beautiful article on pg 12.
-Bhadrachalam is on the bank of Godavari.
-The ship travels on the water.
-There is a beautiful picture on the wall.
-I had pie with whipped cream on top of it.

b) to specify specific day or date:

-He was born on 18th January.
-She will be there on Diwali.
-We met on Sunday.
-He is working on his homework at the movement.

c) to indicate electronic devices:

-Siva is talking on the phone.
-She has been on the computer since this morning.
-I like to watch reality shows on TV.

d) to indicate a part of the body:

-The stick hit me on the leg.
-I got wound on my right hand.

e) to indicate the state of something:

-Everything in this store is on sale.
-The building is on fire.

f) with small islands:

-They spend weekend on Pichuka Lanka.

g) with directions:

-Go on straight. Dont take turns.
-Bring the book on the left side of you.



IN:

a) with unspecific times during a day, month, year or season:

-I went there in 1978.
-We arrived in this country in October.
-I lived in India in the 1980s.
-We get up early in the morning.
-I like to go for walk in the evening.
-We often get cyclones in the summer.

b) with the action that will occur in the future:

-I will see you in a few days.
-We will meet in a couple of days.

c) with countries, cities, regions:

-He lives in Delhi.
-She arrived in Hyderabad for the seminar.
-I am going to see her in Pune this Dasara.
-My hometown is Guntur, which is in Andhra Pradesh.

d) to indicate a location or place:

-Our seats are in the third row.
-I met Vani in the street.
-Who is that lady in the photograph?
-What do you have in your hand?
-The book is in the drawer.
-She looked me directly in the eyes.
-I am currently staying in a hotel.
-I want to go for a walk in the garden.

e) with a shape, colour or size:

-Colour the building in orange.
-Stand in a line.
-This model comes in four different sizes.
-You have to stand in queue to get the ticket.

f) to express while doing something:

-In preparing for the 1st Sem., I revised the whole syllabus.
 -A catch phrase needs to be impressive in marketing a product.

g) with a belief, opinion, interest or feeling:

- I dont believe in the sentiments.
-I have good opinion in him.
-We are not interested in playing now.

h) with the bodies of water:

-Fish lives in the water.
-We find shells in the sea.
-Lotus grows in the pond.

AT

a)with specific time during the day:

-Lets meet at 9 o'clock.
-The bus reaches at 5 p.m.
-I love to go shopping at Diwali time.
-Do you dream at night.

b) with places in town, cities etc.

-There is a party at Grand Kakatiya .
-There were hundreds of people at the park.
-I am going to stay at home  today.
-He arrived at work early this morning.
-Stand at the door.
-I will meet you at the end of the street.
-Turn left at the lights.

c) to indicate email address:

-Please email me at spf@gmail.com.
  
d) to indicate an activity:

-He laughed at my acting.
-I am good at colouring.
-He works at the hospital.

e)  with places on a thing

-You keep this ad at the top of the page.
-Write my name at the bottom of the page.
-The student finished the school year at the top of his class.

f)in groups of people:

-He always sits at the back of the class.

g)some adjectives follows by at:

i)good/excellent/brilliant
-They are excellent at planning parties.

ii)bad/hopless
-Unfortunately, I am hopeless at being on time.

iii)amazed/astonished/shocked/surprised
-I was amazed at his stamina.


Important  Notes:

a)In/at/on the corner

-in the corner of a room, but at the corner of a street.

b)In/at/on the front

-in the front/in the back of a car.
-at the front/ at the back of a building.
-on the front/on the back of a piece of a paper.

c)in the morning/afternoon/evening but at night

-wake up early in the morning.
-Go to bed early at night.

d)At/on the top

-Your forehead is at the top of your head.
-Your hair is on the top of your head.
